What is the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers?

The California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers is a trade organization founded in 1911 to promote and protect the interests of California’s nursery industry. Members of the association are growers, retailers or associate companies. They range from single location companies to those with operations throughout the state. Regardless of size, they are all committed to the future of the nursery industry. Learn more on their website here.

What are the benefits of the California Grown Nursery Marketplace for a nursery grower?

For growers, the Nursery Marketplace is a means of reaching more retail and landscape customers with specific information on the variety and quantity of plants you have available for sale. The Nursery Marketplace allows producers to put their company name and product list in front of existing and potential customers, upload plant inventory lists and provide additional information about your company.

How often can a nursery update its plant inventory?

Producers can update their plant inventories as often as you’d like.

Will I be able to sell plants on the Marketplace?

The Marketplace will not support e-commerce, but it will help you gain access to sales leads for retail and landscape buyers. Buyers will be able search for plants by conducting something called a “reverse auction” which will allow them to search the Nursery Marketplace for plants and receive information about which companies have the quantity of plant they are looking for. Buyers can then reach out to those companies to purchase plants.

What format do I need to upload my plant list?

Plant lists will be uploaded as an Excel file. For accuracy, the file will have to be formatted to a standard template. California Association of Nurseries and Garden Center personnel can help with formatting your files. As long as you continue to use the matching file format, you may update your on-line inventory as often as you like so that your plant list and quantities are up-to- date.

Will I also need to provide plant descriptions and cultural information along with the plant inventory lists?

Plant descriptions, cultural and other information will be available on the website, but it is not necessary for producers to provide it with their lists. The California Association of Nurseries and Garden Center is working with experts to tag plants with additional information like botanical and common names, water needs, sun exposure requirements and zones, so the database is searchable by these filters.

How can I get started using the California Nursery Marketplace?

Please sign up here to receive updates about the site’s progress and for notification of when the site will be live. Once the site is live, all you have to do is register an account on the website and create your company profile. The company profile will include contact information and other specifics about your company. You may also upload your current product catalog to be included in your company profile, but products listed in your catalog will not be searchable. We will also require you to provide us with some brief information about your current plant sales. Once your company profile has been created you can upload your plant inventory.

Why do you require information on sales?

Because the California Grown Nursery Marketplace is being developed with CDFA Specialty Crop Block Grant funds, there are requirements to measure results of the project. We are asking for information about each producer’s annual sales when they register so a benchmark sales figure can be determined. Producers will be required to provide annual sales information for their companies each year to continue using the Nursery Marketplace. The sales information provided will be kept confidential and will be aggregated into cumulative data used for grant reporting purposes only.
